While we don't have a date for the founding of Townsend, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1883.

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Townsend had an population of 2,138 people. This is an increase of 13.84% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 14.52% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Townsend had a population of 1,878 people (which is 33.34% of the total population of Broadwater County). This makes Townsend the county's most populous community.

The population of Townsend represents 0.19% of the total population of Montana (which has 989,415 people), making it the state's 35th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,878 people, the population of Townsend has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (which had a count of 1,867 people).

We originally found mention of Townsend in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Townsend was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Townsend post office opened in 1883.

We also found Townsend in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
