Broadwater County was founded in 1897. Broadwater was created by taking area from Jefferson and Meagher Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Broadwater had a population of 6,237 people. This is an increase of 10.72% since the last Census (which gave a population of 5,633 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Broadwater represented 0.57% of the total population of Montana.
