At the time of the 2010 Census, Laurel had a population of 18,540 people (or 27.34% of the total population of Jones County). This makes Laurel the county's most populous community.

The population of Laurel represents 0.62% of the total population of Mississippi (which has 2,967,297 people), making it the state's 22nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 18,540 people, the population of Laurel has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (which had a count of 18,393 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Laurel was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Laurel post office opened in 1884.
