Quitman County was founded in 1877. Quitman was created by taking area from Coahoma, Panola, Tallahatchie and Tunica Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Quitman had a population of 6,808 people. This is a decrease of 17.21% since the last Census (which gave a population of 8,223 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Quitman represented 0.28% of the total population of Mississippi.
