Choctaw County was founded in 1833. Choctaw was created by taking area from Lowndes, Madison, Monroe and Yazoo Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Choctaw had a population of 8,192 people. This is a decrease of 4.15% since the last Census (which gave a population of 8,547 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Choctaw represented 0.29% of the total population of Mississippi.
