The origin (or the toponymy) of Peculiar: The story goes that several names proposed by the first postmaster (Edgar Thomson) were rejected. In frustration, he wrote that "We don't care what name you give us so long as it is sort of 'peculiar'". In his response, the Postmaster General suggested that they name their town 'Peculiar'. From the Census Estimates for 2019, Peculiar has a population of 5,485 people<2> (see below for details). The community of Peculiar is 990 feet [302 m] above sea level.<3>. This makes Peculiar the county's 5th most populous community. The population of Peculiar represents 0.08% of the total population of Missouri (which has 5,988,927 people), making it the state's 140th most populous community.
