The community of Keytesville is the Seat for Chariton County.

Chariton County was founded in 1821 and was created by taking area from Howard County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Chariton had a population of 7,463 people. This is a decrease of 4.7% since the last Census (which gave a population of 7,831 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Chariton represented 0.13% of the total population of Missouri.
