While we don't have a date for the founding of Ontonagon, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1846.

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Ontonagon had an population of 1,249 people. This is a decrease of 16.4% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 29.4% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Ontonagon had a population of 1,494 people (which is 22.04% of the total population of Ontonagon County). This makes Ontonagon the county's most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,494 people, the population of Ontonagon decreased 15.55% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 1,769 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Ontonagon was on a map titled Road Map for Michigan (from Shell Oil, 1956).

We also found Ontonagon in the book titled .<7> From that list, the Ontonagon post office opened in 1846.
