Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Hillsdale had an population of 7,989 people. This is a decrease of 3.8% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 2.96% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Hillsdale had a population of 8,305 people (which is 17.79% of the total population of Hillsdale County). This makes Hillsdale the county's most populous community.

The population of Hillsdale represents 0.08% of the population of Michigan (which has 9,883,640 people), making it the state's 110th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 8,305 people, the population of Hillsdale has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (which had a count of 8,233 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Hillsdale was on a map titled Road Map for Michigan (from Shell Oil, 1956).
