The Commemorative Quarter for Michigan

Welcome to English ...

So far, we found very little information about English. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added English to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of English - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with English, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of English , we believe that it would have been located within present day Menominee County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of English, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1875.

Time Zone: The area where English was located is in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

The location where English once stood is in the (906) area code.

Communities Also Named English ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are 16 communities that are also named English - they are located in Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas (3), Washington and West Virginia.

For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for English.

Adding English to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned English was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the English post office opened in 1875.

We also found English in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about English, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Michigan's counties, including Menominee, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
