We have great-grandparents who lived in a small community in the northeast corner of their home county. During their lives, most doctors and hospitals were in the next county to the east. Almost all of the nearby churches and cemeteries were in the county to the north.

A straight line distance ignores obstructions like rivers, canyons, lakes, et cetera - it's truly a line drawn from Point A (ie- Backus Beach) to Point B.Our distance measurements begin at a specific point in Backus Beach. The point we use is located at these GPS coordinates - Latitude: 44.7600, Longitude: -83.5461       In this case, the coordinates for Backus Beach have been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
