The location of Phoenix has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (the GNIS).<3> While we don't have a date for the founding of Phoenix, you might get a feel for it by knowing that the earliest mention that we've found (so far) was on a map dated 1911. When the people of Phoenix referred to themselves (known as a demonym), they are believed to have used Phoenician<4> While the community is gone, the present day location for Phoenix is 1,080 feet [329 m] above sea level.<5>.
