At the time of the 2010 Census, Sulphur had a population of 20,410 people (which is 10.59% of the total population of Calcasieu Parish). This makes Sulphur the parish's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Sulphur represents 0.45% of the population of Louisiana (which has 4,533,372 people), making it the state's 15th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 20,410 people, the population of Sulphur has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (which had a count of 20,512 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Sulphur was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Sulphur post office opened in 1895.
