While we don't have a date for the founding of Russell, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1871.

The origin (or the toponymy) of Russell: Named for Alva P. Russell, a Captain serving with the 2nd Kansas Regiment and was killed at the Battle of Prairie Grove (AR).

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Russell has a population of 4,430 people<2> (see below for details).

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Russell had an population of 4,430 people. This is a decrease of 1.69% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 5.66% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Russell had a population of 4,506 people (or 64.36% of the total population of Russell County). This makes Russell the county's most populous community.

The population of Russell represents 0.16% of the population of Kansas (which has 2,853,118 people), making it the state's 63rd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 4,506 people, the population of Russell decreased 4.05% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 4,696 people).

We originally found mention of Russell in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Russell was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Russell post office opened in 1871.

We also found Russell in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
