The Commemorative Quarter for Kansas

Welcome to Richmond ...

So far, we found very little information about Richmond. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Richmond to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Richmond - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Richmond, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Richmond , we believe that it would have been located within present day Nemaha County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Richmond, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1855.

If Richmond still existed, it would have been in the (785) area code.

Communities Also Named Richmond ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are two Kansas communities named Richmond: This one is located in Nemaha County and the other is located in Franklin County.

Beyond Kansas, there are 62 communities that are also named Richmond - they are located in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, British Columbia, California (2), Florida, Georgia, Illinois (2), Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan (2), Minnesota (2), Mississippi (2), Missouri (2), Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Nova Scotia (4), Ohio (2), Oklahoma, Ontario (3), Oregon, Pennsylvania (5), Prince Edward Island, Quebec (3), Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia (2), Washington and Wisconsin.

Adding Richmond to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Richmond was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Richmond post office opened in 1855.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Richmond, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Kansas' counties, including Nemaha, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
