At the time of the 2010 Census, Portage had a population of 36,828 people (or 22.41% of the total population of Porter County). This makes Portage the county's most populous community.

The population of Portage represents 0.57% of the total population of Indiana (which has 6,483,802 people), making it the state's 22nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 36,828 people, the population of Portage increased 9.95% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 33,496 people).
