Marion County was founded in 1823. Marion was created by taking area from Fayette and Jefferson Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Marion had a population of 37,205 people. This is a decrease of 5.61% since the last Census (which gave a population of 39,416 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Marion represented 0.31% of the total population of Illinois.
