At the time of the 2010 Census, Fairfield had a population of 9,464 people (or 56.19% of the total population of Jefferson County). This makes Fairfield the county's most populous community.

The population of Fairfield represents 0.31% of the total population of Iowa (which has 3,046,355 people), making it the state's 41st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 9,464 people, the population of Fairfield has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (which had a count of 9,509 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Fairfield was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Fairfield post office opened in 1839.

We also found Fairfield in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
