Welcome to Oakland ...

So far, we found very little information about Oakland. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Oakland to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Oakland - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Oakland, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Oakland , we believe that it would have been located within present day Hall County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Oakland, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1857.

When the people of Oakland referred to themselves (known as a demonym), they are believed to have used Oaklander<3>

Time Zone: The area where Oakland was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Oakland would have been located in the (770) area code.

Communities Also Named Oakland ...

While we believe that this Oakland is located in Hall County, we know of another 6 Georgia communities named Oakland. Those communities are located in the following counties: Clay, Gilmer, Lee, Marion, Meriwether and Terrell County.

Beyond Georgia, there are 131 communities that are also named Oakland - they are located in Alabama (4), Arkansas, California (2), Connecticut, Delaware, Florida (2), Illinois (3), Indiana (2), Iowa (2), Kansas (5), Kentucky (3), Louisiana (3), Maine, Manitoba, Maryland (6), Massachusetts (2), Michigan (2), Minnesota (2), Mississippi (3), Missouri (4), Nebraska, New Brunswick, New Jersey (3), New York (2), North Carolina (7), Nova Scotia, Ohio (10), Oklahoma, Ontario (2), Oregon, Pennsylvania (8), Rhode Island, South Carolina (4), Tennessee (12), Texas (8), Vermont, Virginia (6), Washington (2), West Virginia (2) and Wisconsin (2).

Adding Oakland to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Oakland was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

From that list, the Oakland post office opened in 1857.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Oakland, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Georgia's counties, including Hall, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>A demonym is the name for a resident of a community which is usually derived from (or is related to) the name of that community. In other words, it's how the residents of Oakland refer to themselves. It's important to note that there aren't any rules for taking a community's name and turning it into a demonym. A demonym is informal and while the majority of Oakland may use one name, keep in mind that others may use something different.
