Towns County was founded in 1856. Towns was created by taking area from Rabun and Union Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Towns had a population of 12,037 people. This is an increase of 14.26% since the last Census (which gave a population of 10,535 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Towns represented 0.11% of the total population of Georgia.
