The community of Watkinsville is the Seat for Oconee County.

Oconee County was founded in 1875 and was created by taking area from Clarke County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Oconee had a population of 40,296 people. This is an increase of 22.82% since the last Census (which gave a population of 32,808 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Oconee represented 0.34% of the total population of Georgia.
