Clarke County was founded in 1801 and was created by taking area from JacksonCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Clarke had a population of 116,342 people. This is an increase of 14.64% since the last Census (which gave a population of 101,489 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Clarke represented 1.24% of the total population of Georgia, making it the state's 14th most populous county (out of 159 counties).
