At the time of the 2010 Census, Lakeland had a population of 97,422 people (which is 16.18% of the total population of Polk County). This makes Lakeland the county's most populous community.

The population of Lakeland represents 0.52% of the population of Florida (which has 18,801,310 people), making it the state's 21st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 97,422 people, the population of Lakeland increased 24.18% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 78,452 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Lakeland was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Lakeland post office opened in 1884.
