Monroe County was founded July 3, 1823 and was created by taking area from Saint Johns County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Monroe had a population of 73,897 people. This is an increase of 1.1% since the last Census (which gave a population of 73,090 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Monroe represented 0.39% of the total population of Florida.
