The population of Sterling represents 0.11% of the total population of Connecticut (which has 3,574,097 people), making it the state's 160th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 3,830 people, the population of Sterling increased 23.59% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 3,099 people).
