Saguache County was founded December 29, 1866. Saguache was created by taking area from Lake and Costilla Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Saguache had a population of 6,829 people. This is an increase of 11.8% since the last Census (which gave a population of 6,108 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Saguache represented 0.12% of the total population of Colorado.
