The origin (or the toponymy) of Capitol City: Named by the founders with the hope that Capitol City would become the capitol of Colorado.

While the community is gone, the present day location for Capitol City is 9,710 feet [2,960 m] above sea level.<3> In other words, the altitude of Capitol City is about 1¾ mile [or ~3 km] above sea level.

We originally found mention of Capitol City in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Capitol City was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Capitol City post office opened in 1877.

We also found Capitol City in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
