At the time of the 2010 Census, San Marcos had a population of 83,781 people. This makes San Marcos the county's 8th most populous community.

The population of San Marcos represents 0.22% of the total population of California (which has 37,253,956 people), making it the state's 88th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 83,781 people, the population of San Marcos increased 52.39% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 54,977 people).
