While our initial data about Gaviota came from various goverment sources (GNIS, FIPS), we also found mention of Gaviota in various books, maps and other sources. When we find a mention, a fact or snippet, we add that information to our Gazetter.

Gaviota is contained in a comprehensive list of Post Offices that was created by Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<1>

From that list:

The Gaviota post office opened in 1896 and had closed by 1957.
