Welcome to Nelson ...The city of Nelson was founded circa 1887 and was incorporated March 18, 1897. The origin (or the toponymy) of Nelson: Originally named Salisbury after Lord Salisbury, the Prime Minister of Britian. The name was changed to Stanley after Frederick Arthur Stanley, the 6th Governor General of Canada. Finally it was renamed in 1888 for the Honorable Hugh Nelson, who was Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Nelson is 2,690 feet [820 m] above sea level.<1> In other words, the altitude of Nelson is ½ mile above sea level. Time Zone: Nelson lies in the Pacific Time Zone (PST/PDT) and observes daylight saving time. The time zone in French: PST- Heure Normale du Pacifique (HNP), PDT- Heure Avancée du Pacifique (HAP). Note: If you leave Nelson and travel east, you will leave Pacific Time and cross into the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT).
