Maricopa County was founded in 1871. Maricopa was created by taking area from Pima and Yavapai Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Maricopa had a population of 4,485,414 people. This is an increase of 17.26% since the last Census (which gave a population of 3,825,110 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Maricopa represented 59.84% of the total population of Arizona.
