Introduction ...

Below is our collection of tidbits, odds 'n ends for Tumbling Shoals.

This page contains four sections:

How Far From Tumbling Shoals to ...

We spend a lot of time looking through Gazetteers & Almanacs that were published in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Many of the Gazetteers include the distance from a community such as Tumbling Shoals to various places of note, such as the White House.

With a nod to our favorite Gazetteers, the straight-line distance<1> beginning in Tumbling Shoals to:

  • Heber Springs [Map], which is the Seat of Cleburne County, lies just to the Southwest.
  • Little Rock [Map], which is the State Capital of Arkansas, lies 60 miles [96.6 km] to the South Southwest (SSW). If you could walk a straight line from Tumbling Shoals to Little Rock, with an average speed<2> of 2.2 miles [3.5 km] per hour, it would take most of three days to make the trip. A horse and buggy averaging 3.2 miles [5.1 km] per hour would take about three full days.
  • The White House (Washington, DC [Map]) is 851 miles [1,369.6 km] to the East Northeast (ENE). Driving, with an average speed of 63 miles [101.4 km] per hour, would take just about two full days, a buggy would take 34 days and walking would take 49 days.
  • The shortest distance<3> to Jerusalem (specifically the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock [Map]) is 6,658 miles [10,715 km] and it lies to the Northeast (NE).<4>
  • The distance to the Great Mosque of Mecca (specifically the Ka'bah - or Kaaba [Map]) is 7,388 miles [11,889.8 km] and it lies to the Northeast (NE).<5>
  • The distance to Saint Peter's Basilica (The Vatican [Map]) is 5,266 miles [8,474.8 km] and it lies to the Northeast (NE).<6>

Footnotes ...

<1>Our distances are not driving distances, but are calculated as a 'point-to-point' distance starting from Tumbling Shoals. A straight line distance ignores obstructions like rivers, canyons, lakes, et cetera - it's truly a line drawn from Point A (ie- Tumbling Shoals) to Point B.

If you need the driving distance, we recommend that you use one of the Mapping Services listed on our Map Page for Tumbling Shoals. Since we usually use Google Maps for our own planning, we've provided the following link: Google Map and Driving Directions starting from Tumbling Shoals

Our distance measurements begin at a specific point in Tumbling Shoals. The point that we are using is located at these GPS coordinates - Latitude: 35.5415, Longitude: -91.9673     [Map].

<2>While we have tried to pick reasonable speeds, the rate of travel is very theoretical - obstacles like fences, hills, lakes, river crossings and rest stops have been ignored. When we say 'Days' of travel, we're assuming 8 hours of travel per day.

- Return to Citation

<3>The shortest line can be visualized by stretching a string on a Globe from Point A to Point B - this is known as a Great Circle Route. Where you might expect the shortest route from Tumbling Shoals to the Middle East to be East and South, the Great Circle Route actually lies to the North and East.

<7>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Tumbling Shoals, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.

<8>The Find-a-Grave website is an excellent research tool with information about a cemetery's location and interments. They also offer a forum for their members which can provide additional help. More information about Find-a-Grave can be found on their website: findagrave.com.
