Welcome to Purves ...

So far, we found very little information about Purves. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Purves to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Purves - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Purves, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Purves , we believe that it would have been located within present day Macon County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Purves, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1905.

Time Zone: The area where Purves was located is in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

The Area Codes where Purves was located: 334 & 483<3>

Communities Also Named Purves ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are 2 communities that are also named Purves - they are located in Manitoba and Texas.

Adding Purves to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Purves was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

From that list, the Purves post office opened in 1905. The Purves post office closed in 1914.

We also found Purves

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Purves, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Alabama's counties, including Macon, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 334 code has been Overlayed with the 483 area code. New phone numbers in the Purves area will be assigned with one of these codes: 334 or 483. As a result, placing a call in the Purves area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number).
