Macon County was founded in 1832 and was created by taking area from Montgomery County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Macon had a population of 18,068 people. This is a decrease of 15.98% since the last Census (which gave a population of 21,505 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Macon represented 0.45% of the total population of Alabama.
