The Commemorative Quarter for Alabama

Welcome to Pencil ...

So far, we found very little information about Pencil. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Pencil to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Pencil - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Pencil, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Pencil , we believe that it would have been located within present day Clay County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Pencil, you might get a feel for it by knowing that the earliest mention that we've found (so far) was on a map dated 1911.

Time Zone: The area where Pencil was located is in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

The Area Codes where Pencil was located: 256 & 938<3>

Adding Pencil to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Pencil was on a map titled Map of Alabama (from Rand McNally, 1911).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Pencil, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Alabama's counties, including Clay, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 256 code has been Overlayed with the 938 area code. New phone numbers in the Pencil area will be assigned with one of these codes: 256 or 938. As a result, placing a call in the Pencil area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number).
