Clay County was founded in 1866. Clay was created by taking area from Randolph and Talladega Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Clay had a population of 13,265 people. This is a decrease of 4.79% since the last Census (which gave a population of 13,932 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Clay represented 0.29% of the total population of Alabama.
