The Commemorative Quarter for Alabama

Welcome to Anker ...

So far, we found very little information about Anker. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Anker to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Anker - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Anker, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Anker , we believe that it would have been located within present day Cullman County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Anker, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1897.

Time Zone: The area where Anker was located is in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

Adding Anker to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Anker was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Anker post office opened in 1897.

We also found Anker on a map titled Rand McNally Map of Alabama (1911).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Anker, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Alabama's counties, including Cullman, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
