Stories, Memories and Thoughts
for Edmonton

Introduction

We love to hear the stories that people remember from their youth, especially those tales about where they grew up.

Since the most interesting history are the stories passed from one person to another, we want to try and record some of them before these little slices of history are lost.

If you have a tale, reminiscence or other thoughts to tell of Edmonton, about the places you knew when young, we would like to include them here.

If you're interested, we have some Guidelines about the stories that we would like to place here - please see our Story Guidelines.

Creation of the Province of Alberta

The province of Alberta, formerly part of the North-West Territories, was created on September 1, 1905, and inaugurated at Edmonton on that same day by Governor General Earl Grey and Prime Minister Sir Wilfred Laurier. Provincial status was the culmination of a struggle for self-government in the territories, led by F.W.G. Haultain. The first Lieutenant Governor of Alberta was G.H.V. Bulyea and the first Premier was A.C. Rutherford.
