At the time of the 2010 Census, Shelby had a population of 9,317 people (or 7.49% of the total population of Richland County). This makes Shelby the county's 2nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 9,317 people, the population of Shelby decreased 5.13% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 9,821 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Shelby was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Shelby post office opened in 1836.

We also found Shelby in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
