Adding Mutton Run to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Mutton Run was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

X2X - From that list, the Mutton Run post office opened in 1879.

We also found Mutton Run on a map titled Rand McNally Map of West Virginia (1911).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Mutton Run, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of West Virginia's counties, including Hampshire, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 304 code has been Overlayed with the 681 area code. New phone numbers in the Mutton Run area will be assigned with one of these codes: 304 or 681. As a result, placing a call in the Mutton Run area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number).
