At the time of the 2010 Census, Elkins had a population of 7,094 people (which is 24.13% of the total population of Randolph County). This makes Elkins the county's most populous community.

The population of Elkins represents 0.38% of the population of West Virginia (which has 1,852,994 people), making it the state's 20th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 7,094 people, the population of Elkins has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (which had a count of 7,032 people).

We originally found mention of Elkins in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Elkins was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Elkins post office opened in 1889.

We also found Elkins in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
