Upshur County was founded in 1851. Upshur was created by taking area from Barbour and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Upshur had a population of 23,806 people. This is an increase of 1.72% since the last Census (which gave a population of 23,404 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Upshur represented 1.29% of the total population of West Virginia, making it the state's 30th most populous county (out of 55 counties).
