The community of Buckhannon is the Seat for Upshur County.

Upshur County was founded in 1851. Upshur was created by taking area from Barbour and Lewis Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Upshur had a population of 24,315 people. This is an increase of 0.25% since the last Census (which gave a population of 24,254 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Upshur represented 1.31% of the total population of West Virginia.
