Taylor County was founded in 1844. Taylor was created by taking area from Barbour, Harrison, Marion and Preston Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Taylor had a population of 16,695 people. This is a decrease of 1.15% since the last Census (which gave a population of 16,889 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Taylor represented 0.91% of the total population of West Virginia.
