Monroe County was founded in 1799 and was created by taking area from GreenbrierCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Monroe had a population of 13,715 people. This is a decrease of 5.95% since the last Census (which gave a population of 14,583 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Monroe represented 0.81% of the total population of West Virginia, making it the state's 40th most populous county (out of 55 counties).
