Time Zone: Monroe County lies in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time.

The community of Union is the Seat for Monroe County.

Monroe County was founded in 1799 and was created by taking area from Greenbrier County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Monroe had a population of 13,295 people. This is a decrease of 1.53% since the last Census (which gave a population of 13,502 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Monroe represented 0.73% of the total population of West Virginia.

While it makes interesting reading all by itself, it should be of special interest to genealogists and family historians looking for people who were either affected by or directly involved in such tragedies.
