Marathon County was founded in 1850 and was created by taking area from Portage County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Marathon had a population of 135,697 people. This is an increase of 1.22% since the last Census (which gave a population of 134,063 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Marathon represented 2.36% of the total population of Wisconsin.
