Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Chincoteague had an population of 2,877 people. This is a decrease of 2.18% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 33.36% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Chincoteague had a population of 2,941 people (which is 8.87% of the total population of Accomack County). This makes Chincoteague the county's most populous community.

The population of Chincoteague represents 0.04% of the population of Virginia (which has 8,001,024 people), making it the state's 80th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 2,941 people, the population of Chincoteague decreased 31.87% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 4,317 people).
