The Commemorative Quarter for Virginia

Welcome to Bonton ...

So far, we found very little information about Bonton. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Bonton to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Bonton - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Bonton, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Bonton , we believe that it would have been located within present day Bedford County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Bonton, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1901.

Time Zone: The area where Bonton was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Communities Also Named Bonton ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found another community named Bonton - it's located in Kansas.

Adding Bonton to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Bonton in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Bonton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Bonton post office opened in 1901.

We also found Bonton on a map titled Rand McNally Map of Virginia (1911).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Bonton, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Virginia's counties, including Bedford, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
