At the time of the 2010 Census, Blacksburg had a population of 42,620 people (or 45.15% of the total population of Montgomery County). This makes Blacksburg the county's most populous community.

The population of Blacksburg represents 0.53% of the population of Virginia (which has 8,001,024 people), making it the state's 16th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 42,620 people, the population of Blacksburg increased 7.7% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 39,573 people).
